Neonatal sepsis represents huge health problem worldwide with high level of morbidity. Preterm neonates are especially vulnerable group, due to immature immune system. Early detection of preterm sepsis is one of the main goal for better treatment of preterm neonates. Even there are numerious studies about the possible biomarkers for early detection of sepsis in preterm neonates, positive biomarkers for sepsis prediction still remain uncertain. In our study, we tried to evaluate some preterm clinical variables, as well as levels of certain cytokines and chemokines as potential biomarkers for sepsis prediction in preterm neonates. Results obtained in our study show that some clinical variables, IL-5 levels and some inflammatory markers (CRP and white cell count) do not have predictive value for sepsis development. Levels of procalcitonin and IFNγ, in venous blood, showed positive predictive potential for sepsis prediction in pretern neonates, 32.-36. gestational age. Values of analyzed c...hemokines (IL-8, MCP-1 i MIP-1α) corresponded with early sepsis development in cord blood but not in the venous blood. Evaluation of obtained results indicates that procalcitonin and IFNγ in venous blood and chemokine levels (IL-8, MCP-1 i MIP-1α) in cord blood may represet biomarkers with great potential for sepsis prediction in preterm neonates 32.-36. gestational age.
