Middle ages bestiaries manuscripts, or “books of animals”, are books which were created during middle ages period and had a didactic and ethically educative content, involving messages which were in accordance with Christian teachings and perspectives on morality. According to manuscripts known so far, the time of their origin is believed to be around the VIII and IX centuries, and their most frequent circulation took place during the period between the XII and XIII centuries, in the European region. They were made in the tradition of Physiologus, the work of unknown author from II or III century that was not preserved, and they evolved into a sort of unique compilation of knowledge on animals and were complemented by the works of authors from the antique and the middle ages. The manuscripts largely belong to the scriptoriums of Western Europe and most of them are illustrated. Beside the text content, it is also very important to research the iconographic component; this was the reason that led us to emphasise these illustrated manuscripts in our study. As will be shown later, the text and the images complement each other. Animals and mythical beings from the bestiaries have passed down onto us numerous legends through religious allegories in the form of very brief chapters about each animal or being separately, sometimes with very luxurious and artistic illustration. As their popularity grew in time, their number increased, and the number of chapters on animals rose from forty, in the original Physiologus, to over a hundred. Animals/beings were given the roles of carriers and interpreters of Christian mysticism and symbolism. This study is researching the origins of imaginary animals and beings from these manuscripts; it studies mythological concepts of text and images by comparing them to conceptions and symbolism of animals in ancient cultures of the East. We have singled out these – mainly composite animals as a separate entity, and have tried to determine their prototypes in the prehistoric and protohistoric epochs in the Asian areas. In other words, we have tried to determine whether they originated in the East. While analyzing each being in a separate chapter, we have consulted various materials such as: translated works of certain antique authors, mythological material, iconographic analogies and a very extensive literature which investigates Western Europe’s bestiaries manuscripts. This study contains the Overview of the manuscripts with partial codicological data, with illustrations taken from digitalized and available manuscripts. For more comprehensive research it is necessary to include a larger number of relevant science disciplines, beyond humanities and social sciences. This topic required interdisciplinary approach that has here been applied only partially – mainly due to the limited access to all of the manuscripts.en
