U poeziji nalazimo tekstualne i unutartekstualne grafostilemske postupke.
The thesis describes distinctive graphostylemic techniques employed in the works of modern literature, both in Serbian and English. Qualitative synchronic linguostylistic analysis has been performed using the paradigmatic examples from all three literary genres. Our description of certain cases also includes the principles of other linguistic fields, whereas the explanations of the artistic value and effects achieved by graphostylemes require the implications of both literary and visual art theories as well. Results have exposed the exact techniques that are caused either by language systems’ features, genre and extralinguistic circumstances or the combinations of these. Thus, this might imply that different uses are likewise a consequence of the previously listed factors. Textual and intratextual graphostylemic techniques can be found in poetry. The textual ones in traditional poems are caused by metrics and refer to the form of a poem, while in concrete poetry they are caused by the form itself. Intratextual techniques used in traditional poetry involve forming of the minuscule as well as the nominatival and relational majuscule graphostylemes. Analysis of the concrete poetry reveals the following intratextual graphostylemes: nonlinguistic symbols, punctuation marks and graphemes whose form is used to express the main motifs and intended points. In terms of genre, typographic techniques such as line breaks, spacing or left and right shifts are more frequent in concrete poetry. Typographic, punctuation and spelling techniques in prose have similar functions in both languages and those are emphasis, characterization and the portrayal of social, ethnic and other differences. However, apart from the universal techniques, all examined novels also contain the specific ones. For instance, uppercase and italics are used for intensification and character or discourse differentiation. In Serbian novel, the latter is accomplished by the employment of dash, parenthesis and ellipsis (which is a unique instance). Typeface and font size change in British novel depicts not only the protagonist’s attitude toward other characters, but also shifts between levels of consciousness. The author of the American novel uses blanks, text breaks and overtyping to illustrate speech pauses and peculiar communication between the characters. Specific techniques are digraphia in Serbian and visual dialect in English, both caused by the writing systems’ features, and the use of pictorial elements, caused by the epoch. The most obvious deviation in drama is the absence of the usual dramatic markers, which is determined by the subgenre. The most prominent are the typographic techniques, so page layout is exploited in order to distinguish between different dialogue and discourse forms or to mark “voices”; uppercase and italics in emphasis, as an implicit instruction for performance or in rare stage directions. An interesting finding in a Serbian play is the occurrence of bold uppercase in every word containing syllables he and she, as it is impossible to present it on stage, i.e. the playwright’s message is clearly conveyed only to the readers. On the other hand, page layout in English play represents the main factor in depicting the place of action and that is the mind of a mentally ill person. The function of the technique is to depict different psychological states of the unidentified person(s), anxiety, mind separated from body and death. Although universal in postdramatic plays, these methods are certainly unique, because graphostylistic markedness is unexpected in a literary form normally written to be performed. The examined playwrights are not concerned with linguistic rules, but they attempt to put forward personal views on communication and contemporary drama in general, as well as new ways of both reading the text and other theatrical agents’ participation. Finally, it is obvious that numerous printing and other technological innovations have led to the changes in styles of writing, the perception of the written text and the way writers communicate with readers. These new practices have changed the readers’ expectations and works analyzed in this paper no longer present novelty, though they have not always been accepted by the peers. The included graphostylemic techniques slow the reading process down and direct attention to the material, physical side of literature and language, which does not necessarily signify loss in the artistic value, as it sometimes lies in the unfulfilled expectations. On the other hand, these frequently employed means of modern poetry, prose and drama point to the new medium that blends speech and writing, reading and watching, a process we are familiar with and use daily. As the description and classification seemed inevitable, in this thesis we attempted to explain the causes, effects and distinctive usages hoping that it might be valuable in future graphostylistic researches.en
