This doctoral dissertation is a thorough examination of the
understanding of the significance that the texts of Gospels have in
hagiographies. The research is particularly based on the analysis of the
Gospel of John in relation to hagiographies with the purpose of
demonstrating that the content of hagiographies was evidently influenced
by that of the gospel, a source of the creative power.
The theory of intertextuality is applied in order to determine the
segments of hagiographies defined as the inter-text as well as to
comprehend the manner in which they were incorporated into the text of
hagiographies, proven to have been frequently adapted. Regarding the fact
that both gospels and hagiographies are permeated by a unique reception
code, the reception theory is also used, which contributes to the detection
of certain hidden clues, suggesting the impact of gospels on
hagiographies.
This research explores the content of the Gospel of John and in
part of the First Epistle of John as rega...rds hagiographies, particularly the
instances of their mutual harmonious interplay. Therefore, the research
examines the following questions: the study of the intertextuality of the
medieval texts considering their genre and analogies; the divine
inspiration and role of hagiographers as mediums of the divine hyper
convention; the characteristics, similarities and interconnectedness of
Gospels and hagiographies; the citation of Evangelists in the Serbian
hagiographies, which indicates that Gospels were considered to be an
integral part of hagiographies owing to their liturgical discourse that
contributed significantly to the study and analysis of hagiographies and
characters in relation to the evangelistic model; and the adaptation of the
evangelistic content in hagiographies by studying citation models and
determined criteria. Thus, besides selecting very clear quotations, it was
possible to delve into the layers of the work that were overwhelmed with
associations and allusions and reach a particular part in the
aforementioned Gospel. The already determined quotation categories were
termed quotes, imitation and description, regarding the degree of their
relatedness to the evangelistic text. Within the framework of these
categories, there were determined the forms of quotations: literal,
unmarked, modified, concise, open, concealed (completely synchronized
with the evangelistic texts, confirming its values and the validity of their
authors‘ statements); ideas, phrases, comparisons, allusions, adaptations
(which resemble the evangelistic texts, establish analogies with their
textual and memorized world, make the impression of repeating the same
model in different conditions); summaries, interpretations, commentaries,
critiques, paraphrases, reminiscences (where a writer‘s free intervention is
mostly visible).
This model of searching for obvious evangelistic quotations as
well as for those found in the unexposed, arcane layers of the text, rich in
associations and allusions, contributes to the poetic and aesthetic analysis
of the Serbian hagiographies presented in this dissertation. This analysis
proves the complex and versatile use of the evangelistic texts in
hagiographies and explains particularly selected segments that convey
important messages. A special attention is paid to those evangelistic
symbols and motives whose semantics cannot be revealed during the first
reading of the text, with the purpose of comprehending a writer‘s message
within a multitude of biblical codes. Moreover, this research is an attempt
to study this significant topic in the Serbian medieval literature by
applying appropriate scientific methods and thus establish the research
framework and indicate major issues.
