The hypothesis suggested in this paper implies that Mediterranea and love are
deeply rooted in the poetry of three „Serbian Argonauts“, the second generation poets
who wrote after the WWII: Ivan V. Lalić, Jovan Hristić and Borislav Radović. The
thesis is divided into two sections, each providing literary and historical framework
within which the three poets can be placed. At first level, the framework is determined
by the poetic tradition of the three poets, whereas at the second level it presents the
search for the beginning of symbolism in the Serbian literature, in order to prove the
presence of symbolism in the Serbian poetry. These two levels partly overlap. In
addition, the research presents the effort to follow the explicit and implicit poetic
discourses of I.V. Lalić, J. Hristić and B. Radović, with special emphasis on the
immanent poetics of the three poets, due to which the research will repeatedly enter into
the field of analytics. This leads to the conclusion tha...t although they are all symbolistic
in essence, the poetics of the three poets express the three individual voices.
The second section of the thesis is dedicated to Mediterranea and love, both at its
thematic and symbolic level. The research provides an insight into relation towards
tradition, primarily towards ancient Greek mythology, through various forms of
intertextuality that are encountered in the poetry of the „Serbian Argonaouts“. The
paper mostly deals with the intertextuality in the literary works of Lalić, Hristić and
Radović which touches the theme of Mediterranea. The special emphasis is placed on
the relation towards the mythical. This relation is different in each of the poets. Lalić
overestimates the myth, in order to incorporate it as a central part of his poetry. Hristić
endeavours to modernize the myth and brings it closer to modern man and the
dehumanized world. As apposed to Lalić and Hristić, Radović embarks on dethroning
the myth, thus arguing for mythologization of daily life.
In the final section, through the overall analysis of the poetic views, the thesis brings
forth a discussion on the importance of love, as a theme or a motif, in the poetry of
Lalić, Radović and Hristić, and its relation towards the Mediterranea. Furthermore the
research leads to the conclusion that love is not equally significant in the poetry of the
three poets. While it dominates in the poetry of Lalić, the role of love is less emphasized
in the poetry of Hristić and Radović. The thesis puts special emphasis on the
intersection between the theme of love and Mediterranea, and analyses it as an aspect of
the contemporary poetry.
