The subject of the study of the doctoral thesis The Tragic in
the short fiction of Serbian realism is the presence and the
shaping of the phenomenon of the tragic in the Serbian
realistic short fiction. The tragic is followed through the
thematic structure, the analysis of historical and social
conflicts, and the confrontation between public and private,
objective and subjective reality, internal conflicts framed
within the personality of individuals. The research of the
manifestation of the tragic in the art form of short fiction and
aesthetic effects involves the processing of tragic motifs,
chronotopes, psychological portrayal of tragic characters,
symbolic images, scenes, stylistic approach and narrative
strategies.
The primary aim of the paper is to explore the tragic aspects in
the Serbian narrative prose of the epoch of realism on an
appropriate corpus, describe the way in which it is shaped in
the Serbian realistic short fiction, and discover the nature of
the ...tragic from a social, ontological and existential aspect. The
research would provide the answer to the question of how the
phenomenon of the tragic goes beyond the former genre
conditionality and goes to the artistic world of the short fiction.
The research includes the short stories of Stefan Mitrov
Ljubiša, Jakov Ignjatović, Milovan Đ. Glišić, Milorad Popović
Šapčanin, Laza K. Lazarević, Janko Veselinović, Simo
Matavulj, Svetolik Ranković, Branislav Nušić, Radoje
Domanović, Stevan Sremac, Bora Stanković, Petar Kočić and
Ivo Ćipik. Aspects of the tragic in their work are examined
within the theoretical framework of philosophical and aesthetic
reflections all the way through to the modern times.
The paper uses a pluralistic approach with a dominant
analytical-interpretative, comparative, structuralist and
psychoanalytic method. Linguo-stylistic, sociological,
historical and biographical methods are also applied.
It is concluded, based on the research, that there is no absolute
reason for the genre conditioning of the tragic. The Serbian
realistic short fiction successfully represents the seemingly
ordinary forms of suffering that should be given special
attention to in order to move the reader as being unusual,
inevitable and tragic. The presence of the tragic in the Serbian
realistic short fiction points to the reflection on the actual real
life of a Serbian man of the second half of the 19th century,
and contributes to a more complete outlook of the writings of
Serbian realists, pointing to a new pattern for interpreting the
characters of Serbian realism that would make them
contemporary, interesting and close to new readers.
